Many people never give the appearance of their ears a second thought. Since the ears are not central to the face, it is easy to consider them purely functional. However, people who have prominent or misshapen ears understand that they can be a source of embarrassment and social discomfort, especially for children. Otoplasty, also known as ear pinning surgery, can correct a variety of ear related complaints. Ear surgery can repair or correct over or undersized ears, position the ear or ears closer to the head, improve symmetry between the ears, or improve the appearance of large, small or stretched earlobes or torn earlobes.
The Otoplasty Procedure
There are many different forms of otoplasty, including:
• Torn earlobe repair
• Earlobe reduction
• Ear pinning
• Ear reshaping
Otoplasty is a low risk procedure and can:
• Improve the shape and proportion of the ears
• Provide a boost in self-confidence
• Be performed on children over the age of five
• Provide results that can last a lifetime
Otoplasty, or ear pinning surgery, is designed to bring better proportion to the ears and improve esthetic balance. The best results make the ears appear smaller and bring them closer to the sides of the head. A small hidden incision is made behind each ear in order to sculpt the cartilage, moving it closer to the head.
The Otoplasty Candidate
Cosmetic ear surgery is ideal for adults, and children between the ages of five to fourteen. A prospective otoplasty patient should have relatively large or protruding ears, or show a demonstrated need to alter the shape, size, or appearance of the ear. As you will note during your consultation, we will evaluate your medical history as much as the physical attributes of your ears.
Recovery And Results
After surgery, the ears will be bandaged to hold them close to the head and to promote healing. These bandages will need to remain in place for about five to seven days and kept dry. The patient will need to take it easy for a few days, and sleep with the head elevated. Pain or discomfort should be manageable with either prescription or over the counter medications.
